Plague Doctor Beaked Mask
Dr. Charles de Lorme invented this protective beaked mask in 1619 to guard against the plague. At the time, diseases were thought to be transmitted through smell, so the large beak could hold protective fragrances such as dried flowers (like roses and carnations), herbs (including mint), spices, camphor, or a vinegar sponge. The mask served as part of a full head to toe wax-covered leather outfit, leggings, gloves, boots, and a hat, a precursor to the modern hazmat suit. Doctors of the time would also carry a wooden cane, to keep their social distance, and not have to physically touch the patient. The plague of 1656 killed 145,000 people in Rome and 300,000 in Naples. This mask has not been approved by the CDC to protect from COVID-19, but it is sure to get attention at the grocery store.
